MY OWN PORTRAIT EXPERIENCE

My turn in front of the camera

I always thought, what do I need with pictures of me? Then my daughter wanted a photo of the 2 of us when I visited her during her 1st semester away at college. When I tried to put her off with the usual (my hair’s not right, I’m not wearing any makeup and look what I’m wearing), she put me in my place saying “I just want a picture with my mom.”

A few years later, I met a few photographers that I trusted, so it was time for me to have my own photo shoot.

I looked like I stepped off the pages of a fashion magazine. I felt like a supermodel (I'll admit, a little uncomfortable at first), with the hair & makeup artist fussing over me, and the photographer making sure my clothing and posing were perfect.

It was a fabulous girls day out and an extravagance that I don’t often (well had never before) allowed myself.

But now, as I look at the photo that I have hanging in my office, that I see anytime I look up from my computer, I smile. And I remember that day and as I write this with my hair pulled up in a pony tail and wearing my best sweats, it helps me remember, that I have IT (maybe not right this minute).

But even more important than the feeling beautiful, is the feeling of confidence and self value that I still have that is reflected in how I approach each and every day.

My regret is that I didn’t feel worthy (in the last 3 decades) of getting photos of me. Imagine if I had known then how the experience would change me - how much stronger I would be now.

I’m just sorry I waited until my 50’s to learn so much about me.
