Donna is 53 years old and lives Mt Laurel NJ. She’s a mom of 3 and devotes herself to a (new) career of helping and teaching special needs children. 

Why create portraits NOW?

I need something to lift me up, to point me in the direction, to understand that I don't need somebody by my side. It took me a long time to get there. There are other ways of doing it - this session was important to me to be able to just do something for me that made me feel beautiful.

What is the best part of being over 50?

People think that because you're over 50 and, that somehow, we lose, you know, that sex appeal. It's still there, you know it, you just have to reach in and embrace it. That's why I think this opportunity to do something like this, especially for women was just so empowering and, and it just allowed me to feel like sexy and beautiful.

What advice would you give your younger 20 or 30 year old self?

To always take care of myself first, before I took care of everybody else. Take time to take care of yourself. It's not selfish, it's necessary, because that's what makes you happy.

What did you learn about beauty at a young age and how has that idea changed?

I would put my mom’s wigs on and I looked ridiculous. But that to me was beautiful. Miss America was beautiful, you know she had this beautiful hair and the crown, and now, I think it was very stiff and more photo-op kind of thing, it was staged.

Now I think the beauty is more from within, and you bring it out and it, that kind of comes with how you feel about yourself and your confidence and your self-esteem.
