Here we are - the start of the holiday season- Thanksgiving! It’s the perfect time to take out your camera and capture some great photos - images of family moments around the dining table while having a lavish meal. Here are some things to keep in mind when you are busy snapping photos this year:
Plan ahead
Take a few minutes of pre-planning to be sure that your photos turn out right. Think of the kinds of images that you want to take throughout the day, both inside or outside.
Take a minute to inspect your camera and lens. Make sure the batteries are fully charged, and the memory card has room for the new pictures. Carefully wipe smudges off the lens and the viewfinder. Then take a few test shots to be sure everything is in working order and to test out settings.
Details
A zoom lens is great at Thanksgiving because it allows flexibility in composition. Capture things that you find draw your attention. After you capture the tried and true, step outside of your comfort zone and experiment. Close ups, pull backs, low light, silhouettes and dare I say it – props.
Candles, wine glasses and flower arrangements are great components to focus on.
Group shots
Every holiday demands a group shot because that is when the entire family is assembled at one place. Celebrate that you all can be together one more year. Create that family heirloom that your children can look back upon when their children have children.
When taking that group shot, make sure that each person is positioned well and in great light. Natural light is best if you can manage it early enough in the day. Flash often creates harsh shadows and pockets of darkness.
Use creative angles
Choose your vantage point carefully, then move around your subject. Walk in a circle, get high above it, get low. Try just getting a hint of Grandma – so you really need to get all of her in order for the family to know who it is? Sometimes just Dad’s strong hands as he carves the turkey is all that you need to tell the story.
Print your photos
Don’t forget to print your photos and put them where you can glance over and enjoy them as you walk around, not have to open up your viewer and search to find your favorite.
Enjoy the day. Enjoy your family. Have a happy holiday season!
It’s about shining from the inside
